Shop Athy Paint & Window Box Project
Members were able to avail of paint for the Premises and a result many premises which were in need of a facelift were able to do just that and Athy is looking the better for it. I would like to pay tribute to Elizabeth Fingleton our Painting Consultant on the committee and also to Frances Mullins and Lorna Mullins and Miriam Moran also well done.INTRODUCTION
A few months after the launch of Shopathy, we are already seeing a marked difference to our town, thanks to all who have taken advantage of the Shopathy Painting Project and to those who are known traditionally for the upkeep of their business premises.In spite of tremendous residential development, Athy was in a period of decline. Shopathy was formed to address the ever increasing level of business closures in the town. This group of traders hope to stimulate a new confidence, and encourage those who live and work in the town to actively support local business.
Shopathy identified the need to present the town streetscape by cleaning and painting the buildings and to add a little seasonal colour.
Having consulted with established local groups, environmental improvements were proposed and out of this grew Shopathy Painting Project which has been co-ordinated with the Seasonal Window Boxes and Hanging Basket Scheme. It is hoped that his project will enhance the work already being done by Athy UDC and Athy Tidy Town’s Committee.
FREE PAINT TO ENCOURAGE MEMBERS TO MAINTAIN THEIR PREMISES.
It was initially envisaged, that subsidised paint would be given to Shopathy members to improve their premises. However we were then fortunate to secure major sponsorship from Kildare based, premium paint manufacturing company, COLORTREND Shopathy members now can avail of free paint for a standard size premises up to the value of €200. It is hoped that Colortrend will shortly appoint an agent in Athy where one can purchase an amazing range of premium quality paints for all surfaces. Their web site offers full advice on paint finishes and application procedures.HOW TO ORDER PAINT.

NOTES ON COLOUR SELECTION.
The value of a well presented and maintained façade, with appropriate colour choices, must not be underestimated. As a heritage town, we should take into consideration several factors before choosing colours for individual premises. If in doubt we would be delighted to give a second opinion on colour choice.Each building must also be looked at carefully and the following factors should be considered before choosing finishes;
- The treatment of natural finishes eg. Stone, brick.(Which should not be painted)
- Tone & Colour and the amount of diversity that one hopes to achieve in the town.
- Consider what is worth emphasising or suppressing.
- Decide on the treatment of the fascias and reveals, the architraves and window sills. Plinths, etc
- Treat with care the signage, and try to operate within the guidelines of the Planning Authority.
